Storms Cut Power to Tens of Thousands in Western Australia
About 70,000 electricity customers were affected by outages as storm warnings remained in place across large areas of the state, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
The severe weather system brought heavy rain and strong winds on Saturday night, followed by another powerful storm on Sunday evening, disrupting WA Day long weekend plans and forcing some flights bound for Perth Airport to be diverted.
Wind gusts reached up to 135 kilometers (84 miles) per hour in some locations, including Cape Naturaliste, with conditions reaching cyclone strength.
Damage was reported in several areas, including the coastal Perth suburb of Cottesloe, where the roof of an apartment building was torn off, according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).
Authorities said that although the worst of the storms had passed, hazardous conditions remained, warning residents to avoid damaged structures, fallen trees, and downed power lines.
